This morning I removed the nvidia drivers AND the video card, now I'm just using the intel chip on the motherboard and I still can't login to a desktop. I can log in through TTY ALT-F1 Īt first I thought it was the NVIDIA drivers, this machine has a GeForce 7800 GT, it requires the nvidia-304 legacy driver.Īnd installed (or tried to install, I'm not sure, it may be blacklisted) Neuveau drivers three times, each time the screen was corrupted, I had to boot to safe mode, and reinstall the nvidia drivers. When I enter credentials or log in as guest an uninformative system error dialog flashes on the screen (I had to video it with my phone to see it) and I get booted back to the login screen. I had a working Ubuntu 16.04 machine (HP Pavilion, Nvidia 7800GT), I ran many updates from the desktop and when it restarted I was stuck in the graphical login screen loop: The machine used to boot to the desktop and now it boots to the login screen.
